What is your favorite thing about yoga?

The challenge! It’s a weight bearing exercise and, at my age, I am looking for activities that that will build up bone strength.

How did you get started with yoga?

My two daughters have done yoga for decades. My daughter-in-law has taught yoga, so really it was keeping up with them that got me started!

Any advice for someone considering taking a yoga class?

To begin at the beginning.

Is there anything else you would like to share about yoga or Yoga Goodness?

The other kinds of things I do for exercise are swimming and walking. I was hoping to use other parts of my body and gain some balance. That’s what I’m really working on at Yoga Goodness is balance. I want to be able to stand on one leg!

What is your favorite thing about yoga?

My favorite thing about yoga is the feeling of renewal it brings to my life. No matter what type of day I’ve had or what I have going on in my life my yoga practice allows me to let it all go. It’s like the refresh button for life:)

How did you get started with yoga?

I started doing yoga about 15 years ago as a way to stretch & prevent injury from all of my other athletic pursuits.

Has the practice of yoga had an affect on the other parts of your life?

Yoga has affected my life in so many ways. I feel better, my posture has improved and I am better able to cope with everyday stress. Must importantly yoga has taught me that everything, every moment, every experience is important! The journey really is more important than the destination.Watch Full Movie Online Streaming Online and Download

Any advice for someone considering taking a yoga class?

Just show up with an open mind and see what happens.

Can you tell us about your experience taking the OM Yoga Teacher Training with Cyndi? How did that shift your relationship with yoga?

Cyndi is one of the great asana teachers and I was so fortunate to learn from her.  The training was challenging, informative and fun! The course was very hands on and we got lots practice teaching and adjusting. While I have no plans to teach yoga studying under Cyndi really helped me deepen my personal practice and understanding of yoga.

I especially love that Yoga Goodness teachers actually teach yoga! Breaking down postures to each student’s level and helping build a strong foundation for a lifelong practice through proper alignment and instruction.

Yoga Goodness Pose of the Month- February 2016

Paschimottanasana

Seated Forward Bend

February is a good month to get a bit internal with oneself.  The fun of the holidays is long past and now it’s just cold.  We might be ready for winter to go away but it’s seems that winter is not ready to leave us yet.  So yogic wisdom suggests that we go with the seasonal vibe and continue to hibernate.  If you have a job and other responsibilities that don’t happen to allow you to live in a cave these days, then forward bends are a great way to cultivate that sense of inward connection.

Mr. Iyengar says that Paschimottanasana helps calm the mind and subdue the ego.  It’s a quiet place to literally rest your brain.  But when you are in the process of growing into this pose it might not feel so relaxing.   The word Paschimottanasana means intense stretch of the back body, which in yoga includes the soles of your feet, the back of your legs, your whole back including the back of your neck and your scalp all the way up and over to the point between your eyebrows.  It’s a long sheaf of energy/connective tissue.

Most of us do a lot of sitting and don’t have the chance to stretch our hamstrings and so when we try to bend forward, we are inhibited by the tightness in the back of our legs.  That’s where yoga props come in.

1.  Try sitting on the edge of folded blanket.  This will help tilt your pelvis forward, enabling the forward folding action at the top of your thighs.Watch Sugarbabies (2015) Full Movie Online Streaming Online and Download

2.  Loop a strap around your feet.  This gives you some leverage when working into the pose.  Push your feet firmly into the strap, lengthen your spine and only fold forward as far as you personally can go, maintaining an open chest.Watch movie online The Transporter Refueled (2015)

3.  Go a little wider with your legs and place a block (or two) under your head.  This is a restorative version which allows your body to softly and gradually drop into this pose.  You can sit on the edge of a blanket for this variation.

Paschimottanasana also means intense west stretch.  In Eastern philosophies the “east” is always in front of us, representing a bright future.  The “west” is always behind us.  So forward bends are about letting go of the past and cultivating contentment with things as they are right now, even if it’s really cold outside.
